The Fishing

“To say that the fishing in Patagonia is world class is a platitude. The combination of wild fish, untouched landscapes, gin clear water, and the lack of fishing pressure combines to make this place the ultimate trout fishing destination in the world.”

PACo´s strategic location is within an hour of so many great fishing spots! In a month, you could fish with us every day and never fish the same water twice. Without a doubt, this area offers the most diverse and best fly fishing in Patagonia.

Our gin-clear waters present world class sight fishing opportunities. Whether you like to float or wade, fish big rivers or small creeks, we have it all!

The fishing program is the work of 25 years of exploring and fishing this area,  it includes some of the most renowned rivers of the National Park, a tailwater, freestones, private spring creeks, and lakes for trophy fish.

Some of our favorite places to fish are: Rivadavia River, Arrayanes River, Rio Futaleufu (Rio Grande), Lago Verde, Corcovado River, Tecka River, and Kruger Lake, just to name a few. Plus, we can include a few secret rivers that you will want to fish with us for an intimate and unique experience.

The species of fish you´ll find in our watersheds are predominantly trout (rainbow & brown), brook trout, landlocked salmon, and in some of our rivers you can still find the native fish that inhabited our waters before the trout were introduced, the silverside (similar to the American white fish), and the perch (Patagonian trout).

Fish in Patagonia are opportunistic feeders. Their diet consists of terrestrials, mayflies, caddis, stoneflies and other fish. Most of the fishing is done using dries and nymphs, and sometimes we will use a streamer at the end of a sink tip to attract a trophy fish. Your guide will select the perfect flies to ensure that you catch plenty of fish!

The fishing gear that we recommend include: 6wt rods with floating WF lines, and an 8wt rod, a reel with good drag and a 250/300 grain sink tip, if you are willing to fish streamers.

Although we recommend that our anglers bring their own gear, we have available high quality rods and reels to provide, if needed.

Our Seasons

November/December

Fishing season at Patagonia Angling Company starts the last week of November, when most of the runoff is over and our rivers are in prime shape. The clarity of the water is good except for a few creeks, and fish are very eager to feed after spawning and the long winter. Chances to catch trophy fish are always around the corner. Dry-fly fishing, as well as nymphing can ensure many successful catches. We can even chuck streamers for those seeking a monster!

Weather in November could be compared to the typical Rocky Mountains spring weather, with warm days, the occasional shower, temperatures ranging from mid-50´s F° to upper 70´s F°, and cool evenings.

Jan/Feb/Mid March

Full summer has arrived! The chances of rain in our region are very low and temperatures are in the 80´s F°, with some peaks in the 90´s F°. When it’s hot, the splash of a big trout, as you reel it in, will cool you off! Dry fly fishing is top notch and Hopper fishing is at its best.

Mid March/April

Fall arrives, and Patagonia becomes colorful and vibrant! The days are a bit shorter, rivers are lower, and fishing remains great since fish know that their feeding window is about to close. Our fall weather is characterized by its crystalline beauty, with colder nights and mornings, and mild temperatures during the day.
